Southeast Suburban Area Plan Update

Adopted 2016

The Southeast Suburban Area Plan Update (PDF) has been adopted by the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners adopted the plan on May 9, 2016, and the Winston-Salem City Council adopted the plan on April 4, 2016. The City-County Planning Board recommended approval of the plan on February 11, 2016. This Plan update will guide future area land use and public investment decisions, including recommendations for:

  • Community facilities
  • Design and appearance
  • Economic development
  • Historic preservation
  • Housing and community development
  • Transportation

Planning Area Boundary

The Southeast Suburban Planning Area (PDF) encompasses 12,233 acres of land and is generally bounded:

  • On the east by the Town of Kernersville and the boundary of the Southeast Forsyth County Plan Area
  • On the north by Business 40 and portions of West Mountain Street
  • On the south by Thomasville Road and the Davidson County line
  • On the west by I-40 and the boundary of the Southeast Winston-Salem Plan Area

The plan area includes land in the City of Winston-Salem (approximately 73%), as well as portions of unincorporated Forsyth County and a very small amount of land in the Towns of Kernersville and Walkertown.
