Salem Creek Connector

Project Updates

Street Updates

  • The intersection of Diggs Boulevard with South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive is permanently closed as of January 2, 2014, to accommodate the construction of the Salem Creek Connector. Williamson street is recommended as an alternative route for accessing South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
  • On January 6, 2014, the U.S. 62 Vargrave Street interchange will be permanently closed to allow work to begin on the new interchange of U.S. 52 with the Salem Creek Connector.
  • Read the Winston-Salem Journal December 30, 2013 article about the intersection and interchange closures.
  • Also, see the Winston-Salem Journal January 2, 2014 article about the beginning of construction on the Salem Creek Connector.

Salem Creek Greenway Detour

The portion of the Salem Creek Greenway between Main Street and Vargrave Street will close March 10 for construction of the Salem Creek Connector. The closure is estimated to be in place for 18 months.

Greenway users will be detoured around the construction zone by using Salem Avenue, Rams Drive, and Vargrave Street. The detour route has a completely connected sidewalk network for pedestrians.

  • Salem Avenue currently has bicycle lanes in both directions.
  • Rams Drive is a bicycle dismount zone. Cyclists are asked to dismount their bicycles and walk on the sidewalk. A buffer will be in place to separate the sidewalk from the motor vehicles lanes, creating a more comfortable walking environment.
  • Shared lane markings have been installed on Vargrave Street to alert motorists that they must share the road with bicycles.
  • A new connection from Vargrave Street to the Salem Creek Greenway has been provided and will remain in place after the new detour is lifted.

Greenway users not comfortable biking on, or walking along, city streets should consider beginning their trip from an alternate location on the greenway and adjusting their route to avoid the detour route.

About the Salem Creek Connector Project

The purpose of the Salem Creek Connector project, U-2925, is to improve connectivity and access to property between Rams Drive (SR 4326) (formerly Stadium Drive) and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (SR 4325). This project consists of constructing a four-lane divided boulevard on new location from Rams Drive to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, including the construction of a diverging-diamond interchange at U.S. 52. The Salem Creek Connector project is included in the 2012-2018 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), an is currently in the project development phase.
