Great things are happening in the East Ward. From government, to religion, to industry, to education...some of all the good things that are Winston-Salem can be found in East Ward. The East Ward is the place to be.
From historic structures in the original town of Winston to the gleaming new buildings of the Piedmont Triad Research Park, the East Ward encompasses the touchstones of our city's past and the keys to our future.
Council Member Annette Scippio represents East Ward residents on the City Council.
Overview
The ward's boundaries begin in downtown and include the site of Winston's first town hall. In the 1920s it was torn down to make room for the Reynolds Building.
Nearby, the Forsyth County Government Center houses County offices in a converted RJR Tobacco factory. Across the street is the Law Enforcement Detention Center.
Trade Street, once the commercial heart of Winston, is now the City's popular arts district. At the Clark Campbell Transportation Center, riders can catch WSTA, PART and Greyhound buses.
Growth & New Facilities
Piedmont Triad Research Park
Between downtown and the rest of the east ward lies the Piedmont Triad Research park. Here, researchers at Wake Forest University are making amazing advances in regenerative medicine. Conversion of this former Reynolds Tobacco factory on Fifth Street will make room for more researchers.
City Yard
Just south of the research park is the City Yard. These 50 acres along Stadium Drive house the city departments that keep Winston-Salem functioning, including Sanitation, Streets, Transportation, and Vegetation Maintenance. This facility on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive is home to the crews that maintain our water and sewer systems.
Winston-Salem State
Continued growth and construction has turned Winston-Salem State's campus into one of the jewels of the east ward. With a student body of more than 6,500 students, surveys consistently rank Winston-Salem State among the best schools of its size in the South.
The new field house at Bowman Gray Stadium houses the university's athletics department. In the fall, the stadium is the home field for the Winston-Salem State Rams football team. During the summer, the stadium draws thousands of race fans every Saturday night for NASCAR's first and longest running weekly racing series.
Winston Lake Complex
One of the City's largest parks...the Winston Lake complex is located just off New Walkertown road. It originally supplied water for the town of Winston. Today the park is a great place to have a picnic, or play a round at the beautiful Winston Lake golf course. Nearby is the Winston Lake YMCA.
Salem Lake
And Salem Lake, once the City's major water supply, now provides recreational fishing and boating opportunities. A seven-mile bike and walking trail follows the Salem Lake shoreline.
Housing
The residents of the East Ward enjoy a wide variety of housing options. Downtown condos and lofts appeal to singles and empty nesters. The historic Reynoldstown neighborhood offers traditional single-family homes convenient to schools, shopping and downtown. Farther out on Old Greensboro Road, the Kensington Village apartments offer upscale rental housing with all the amenities.
The Alder's Point Apartments, built to replace the aging Happy Hill Gardens public housing project, are the centerpiece of the new housing available in the historic Happy Hill neighborhood just south of Old Salem. And at the eastern end of the ward, areas such as Sedge Garden offer a suburban living and room to stretch.
Arts, Culture, & History
On New Walkertown Road, the privately funded Delta Arts Center is our City's oldest incorporated non-profit African-American cultural organization offering visual art, drama and music to people of all ages.
The East Winston branch of the Public Library is now the East Winston Heritage Center....dedicated to preserving the rich history of the African American community in Winston-Salem. The collection contains materials for research and study, as well as current materials.
Other historic sites in the East ward include the old Fire Station Number 4. History was made here in 1951 when it became North Carolina's first integrated firehouse. The old Atkins High School, now the home of the Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy, was the first high school here to serve African-Americans.
