Ages 6 months to 5 years

• Children six months through age 5 years can participate in the swim lesson program
• One on one (parent to child ratio) required for all lessons

Babes In Arms

6 months to 3 years: Children learn how to enter the pool, hold their breath, put their face in the water, blow bubbles, and climb out of the pool. Children are grouped by age groups: 6 to 23 months, 2-3 years this lesson.

Parent/Child

3 years to 5 years: Under the instruction of a swimming teacher, parents work their child to submerge, float on front and back, kick on front and back, push off wall, and learn the fundamentals of the front, back crawl, and elementary backstroke.

All Babes in Arms and Parent Child Classes will be held at Winston Waterworks on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m.

Lessons held June 10 - July 29

Ages 6 years and up

Children 6 years and over can take swim lessons. If a child turns 6 years old before Labor Day, we will accept them for swim lessons. City residents have priority for swim lessons, followed by non-city residents.

Lessons will be held at Bolton, Kimberley Park, Long Creek, Mineral Springs, Parkland, Polo, and Reynolds Park pools.

Youth Lessons are held two nights per week either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 6:00 p.m. - 6:45 p.m.

• Mondays and Wednesdays*: Bolton, Long Creek, Reynolds Park
• Tuesdays and Thursdays*: Kimberley Park, Long Creek, Mineral Springs, Parkland, Polo  

The Aquatic Program offers 3 levels of swim lessons based on American Red Cross swim instruction:

Starfish (Level 1)  

Fundamental Skills: Swimmers will be taught to submerge, kick on front and back, float and alternate arms for the crawl stroke. Starfish will not use the deep end of the pool for any instruction. Introduces the fundamentals of front and back crawl, and elementary backstroke.

Swordfish (Level 2)

Stroke Readiness: Back crawl, front crawl, and elementary back stroke progress to swimming distances up to 12 yards, alternate breathing introduced, swimming to the bottom.

Shark (Level 3) 

Stroke Development: Deep water swimming, long distance up to 25 yards, breaststroke introduced. Treading in deep water introduced. Increase in distances of back and front crawl, and elementary backstroke refined.

Swim Team (Level 4) 

Advanced Swimming: Deep water swimming, lap swimming of strokes already learned. Each pool has a swim team for children ages 17 years and under, which is a continuation of swim lessons. The swimmers try to perfect the back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, and the American crawl. Swim teams compete against the other swimming pools in the age groups of 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-17.

Diving Instruction

Several pools provide diving instruction - Winston Waterworks does not have adequate depth to safely provide diving instruction. The fundamentals are taught to each swimmer, such as approach, take off, how to get height, etc. Diving Instruction is given to Level 3 and Swim Team Participants.

Days, times, and sessions may change due to weather conditions, pool conditions, and staff availability.

Adult Swim Instruction

Several pools offer Level 1 and level 2 swim instruction to adults.  Please contact your local pool to inquire about time and availability of these lessons.

• Adult lessons are taught is waist deep water to maximize comfort
• Adult lessons may have combined levels depending on demand
• Adult lessons are FREE group lessons available to city residents

Level 1

Level 2

Stroke Readiness: Back crawl, front crawl, and elementary back stroke progress to swimming distances, alternate breathing introduced.

All Lessons held at Parkland Pool Wednesdays 6:00 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. (lessons begin the week on June 14)

Aquabilities

Aquabilities is a program that teaches youth and adults that require an instructional setting with special needs instructors for persons with disabilities. Aquabilties teaches students how to move, swim, and play in the water. Aquabilities Classes are divided into two levels: Water Exploration & Safety, and Swimming 101. 

• Water Exploration & Safety allows students to explore the water and learn beginner swimming skills with the aid of a parent/guardian/caregiver beside them in the water for comfort and assistance. 
• Swimming 101 allows more comfortable swimmers to learn swimming techniques in a small group setting.

Registered swimmers will be assessed on a later date prior to the start of class to determine the appropriate swimming class. Registration is first-come, first-serve basis. Registration has closed. We are now accepting participants for our waitlist.

Facility Accommodations

• A lift apparatus for wheelchair participants is available at Bolton, Parkland, Long Creek and Winston Waterworks Aquatic Center. 
• A wheelchair ramp is available at the Reynolds Park, Parkland, Kimberley Park, and Mineral Springs pools.
