Evidence Management

Evidence FilesResponsibilities

The Evidence Management Section is responsible for maintaining the security, integrity and chain of custody of all property that comes into their possession in accordance with state laws and department policies and procedures.

Under the direction of the Evidence Supervisor, Evidence Specialists are responsible for receiving, storing, releasing, and disposal of evidence, found and safekeeping property.

Evidence

Evidence is property related to the commission of a crime. Items held as evidence may only be released after the criminal case is completed and a final disposition is received from the case officer or the District Attorney’s Office.

Evidence Specialists do not have the authority to release evidentiary property without a final disposition.

Found

Found property is lost or abandoned and not suspected to be connected with any criminal offenses.

Safekeeping

Safekeeping property is placed in the custody of the department on behalf of the owner for temporary holding and protection.
