Winston-Salem police officers enjoy competitive pay and an advantageous retirement plan. City Council, in support of the Winston-Salem Police Department, has approved for sworn police officers to receive up to a 14.70% pay increase during fiscal year 2023 and then an additional 2% raise every six months thereafter.  In addition, City Council approved a $2,500.00 signing bonus for applicants who are hired as a police officer or a communications operator. Take-home Cars

Winston-Salem police officers are allowed to take their assigned vehicles to their residence up to 60 miles from center of downtown.  

Sworn Pay

  • Police Officer Trainee Starting Salary: $50,000
    • with A.A./ A.S. Degree: $52,500
    • with B.A./B. S Degree: $55,000
  • Sworn Officer Starting Salary: $52,500
    • with A. A. S Degree: $55,125
    • with B.A. or B. S Degree: $57,750

Non-Sworn Starting Salary

  • Crime Scene Technician: $39,018
  • Police Records Specialist: $34,080
  • Police Evidence Specialist: $34,080
  • Communications Operator: $39,799  
  • Telephone Response Operator: $31,851
  • Police Processing Technician: $34,080

Additional Incentives

  • Lateral Entry: Pay depends on experience
  • Military Incentive: Police Applicants will receive an additional 5% pay increase with military experience
