Travis Page

This page shares the evidence released by Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill on March 14, 2016 regarding the death of Travis N. Page.

Incident Details

On December 9, 2015, Officers were dispatched on a report of shots being fired at the Family Dollar store on Old Rural Hall Road. Witnesses described the suspect as a large man with dreadlocks, wearing a blue shirt and dark shorts. Officer Austin Conrad was a block away on an unrelated call when he saw Page, who matched the suspect's description, walking down the street.

Conrad approached Page, who initially complied with Conrad's orders before running away. Page tripped and fell over a drainage ditch, where Conrad and other officers responding to the call attempted to subdue him as he resisted arrest. In the process one officer used pepper spray, although an autopsy later showed that the spray went into his hair and was not inhaled. After Page was handcuffed, he became unresponsive. Police officers tried to revive Page, administering CPR and injecting him with Narcan in case he was suffering from a drug overdose. Forsyth EMS determined that Page had an irregular heart beat and took him to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy revealed that Page was morbidly obese, suffered from an enlarged heart, had an irregular heart rhythm and a liver that was enlarged by obesity and chronic alcohol use. The medical examiner could not determine a specific cause of death, but did note that there was no evidence of asphyxiation, spinal injuries, or damage to the skull or brain.
