Shared Mobility

Scooters and bikes that are available for short-term rentals in Winston-Salem are a helpful component of our transportation system. They provide a convenient means for "last mile" and "first mile" transportation -- for example, getting from the bus stop to your office, and for getting back to the bus stop when it’s time to go home. They also make it easier for people to get around without using a car.

City ordinance allows "dockless" shared mobility vehicles to be used only between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. A dockless vehicle is one that does not have to be picked up or dropped off at a docking station.

Person on scooter

If you use scooters or bikes, you must follow these rules:

  1. You must be at least 16.
  2. Do not ride on sidewalks. Scooters can only be used in streets.
  3. Obey stop lights, stop signs and all other traffic laws. Under North Carolina law, scooters and bikes must follow the same traffic laws as motor vehicles. This includes yielding to pedestrians in the public right-of-way.
  4. Do not block sidewalks, driveways or curbside parking with the scooter or bike when you are finished riding.
  5. Scooters cannot be used in Old Salem, on greenways or in public parks.

Not a rule -- but a strong recommendation: Wear a helmet!
