Bridging the Triad - Regionals

Bridging the Triad Regional event was held Saturday, FeRegioanl Prize Tablebruary 22 to wrap up our celebration of National Engineering Month. Contestants competed locally at six municipalities and the top 3 winners in each youth age division and top adult were awarded to move onto the regional event. This activity is to engage community members in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), by testing participants engineering skills through building a bridge with only 100 craft sticks and glue!

The regional event was hosted by Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department at their Griffin Recreation Center. Top contestants from the six municipalities came together to compete. The Winston-Salem Recreation & Parks Department was represented with seven participants in the various age divisions. Top participants were awarded prizes at the regional event and Winston-Salem brought home three of the top prizes. Winners included 

  • Isabel Wilson (10) who was awarded first place for the 8-11 year old category; her bridge held 117.7 lbs. 
  • Rachel Merritt (16) was awarded first for the 15-17 year old category
  • Mrs. Linda Combs (adult) was awarded first for the adult category; her bridge held 188.6 lbs.

In addition, spectators and participants utilized the robot station that was provided by the NCAT Cooperative Extension; this activity engaged youth in attendance with another STEM activity.Regional Bridge Robot activity

We would like to congratulate all participants for moving forward to the regional competition and are very proud of everyone. Winners of the event are pictured above (Rachel Merritt not pictured).
