West First Street Bridge Replacement

The City of Winston-Salem proposes to replace Bridge No. 330296, on West First Street over the Norfolk Southern Railway, just west of West Northwest Boulevard. Bridge No. 330296 is adjacent to the West Highlands Historic District and is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

The existing bridge, which was constructed in 1939, is approaching the end of its useful life. The existing bridge is 54 feet in width and has 8-foot sidewalks on both sides. It is 81.5 feet in length and has a vertical under clearance of 20.5 feet over the existing railroad tracks.

Replacing the bridge will require raising the grade of West First Street to accommodate the current 23-foot vertical under clearance required by Norfolk Southern. The proposed bridge will have be 51 feet in width with 6-foot sidewalks on both sides.

Right-of-way acquisition, easements, and retaining walls are anticipated. The road will be closed during construction and traffic will be detoured off-site.

Construction is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2021.
