Equity Core Team

What is an Equity Core Team? 

A primary leadership team, responsible for designing, coordinating, and organizing racial equity plans and activities across the internal structure of the City of Winston-Salem.  

What are the key functions of an Equity Core Team? 

  • Catalyzing equitable systems change in government 
  • Coordinating the design and implementation of an Equity Action Plan 
  • Cultivating new racial equity leadership and active employee engagement 
  • Championing racial and social justice and celebrating and sustaining success 

What are the duties and expectations of Core Team Members?

  • Participate in all Equity Core Team meetings, activities, and committees 
  • Champion and advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Determine openings to pilot activities, develop goals and plans, and implement strategies for achieving results. 
  • Encourage employee generated ideas
  • Collaborate and build relationships with staff across departments and leverage internal expertise to advance goals of the effort 

What is the time commitment? 

The first Core Team members will commit to a one-year term. In the infancy of the Core Team, we are anticipating one two-hour meeting per month. Once a training schedule has been developed, there is likely to be an additional one-hour training monthly. This may vary and is subject to change.

  • Help establish common language throughout the organization

  • Humility to continually learn and engage other in self-reflection 
  • Resilience to engage in deep, challenging, and long-term work 
  • Relationships, internally and externally, that can be leveraged to expand engagement 
  • Creativity to think outside of the box to craft forward thinking and innovative strategies 

Core Team Application

You have an opportunity to nominate yourself or someone else! Members of this team serve for one year during which they will learn about racial equity. Members will also have an opportunity to learn (or enhance) training, facilitation and communication skills, which will be used to integrate racial equity into the language and decision making processes of the City of Winston Salem.   

To be eligible you must:

  • be employed by the City of Winston-Salem for one (1) year or more;
  • have five (5) to ten (10) hours per month to devote to the work of the team 
  • have the permission of your Supervisor to participate on this team.
  • Have Communication skills- willing/able to speak in front of groups 
  • High motivation and ability to motivate others 

Applications should be completed by Monday May 31, 2021. Applicants that meet the above mentioned criteria will be interviewed in June 2021.
