Vacant Lots for Affordable Housing

In June 2022, the City of Winston Salem adopted two ordinances supporting the development of affordable housing throughout the community. The objective of the ordinances is to create a program that is intentional about the sale or lease of city-owned properties for the creation of affordable housing.

The “Affordable Housing Program” and the “Housing Justice Act” ordinances effectively establish and define the city-programs related to this endeavor. City staff compiled a “Map Book” of properties that are available for sale or lease to entities wanting to develop affordable housing. The Map Book includes preselected parcels from the City’s surplus-property inventory with a focus on suitability for affordable housing development. The Map Book link, noted below, includes a list of parcels, maps and additional information for select City sites available for disposal.
