Program Description:

The Successful Outcomes After Release Program (SOAR) is designed to provide temporary gainful employment to former offenders that meet program guidelines while supplementing the city’s existing workforce in areas of critical need. The city will designate temporary positions for a period of six months. Under immediate supervision, SOAR participants will perform routine labor and clerical jobs. 

Additionally, program participants will be provided personal and professional development training. Program participants are encouraged to apply for full-time positions within the city at any time during their participation in the SOAR Program.

Qualifications:

To be eligible to participate in this program, applicants must meet 
the following criteria:

  • Must be a resident of Winston-Salem
  • Must have at least one prior conviction
  • Must pass a City-sponsored drug test
  • Must consent to a background check
  • Must be registered with selective service (required for males only)
  • Must be able to work 32 hours a week (Monday through Friday)

Note: Some assignments may require working nights and/or weekends.

Physical Requirements:

Reasonable accommodations may substitute for physical requirements listed:

  • Must be able to lift or move minimum of 25 pounds and maneuver up to 1 mile
  • Must be able to operate light and medium equipment
  • Must be able to work with large and small objects

This position will work outdoors and may be exposed to changing weather, adverse smells and sights, loud sounds and repetitive operations.

Participants are paid the city's minimum wage.

Program Description:

The Positive Path Program (P3) is designed to reshape lives through science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) exposure, mentors, hands-on training, and life skills to enrich the future of at-risk youth and young adults ages 16 - 24. The program uses a holistic approach to shape social behavior through a strategic curriculum. It provides real-life examples in hopes apprentices learn and mimic positive behavior.

The program offers General Education Development (GED) assistance, STEAM exposure, personal and professional development training, career shadowing, networking, and field trips.

This is a 5-month temporary program with 6 months of supportive services. Apprentices are paid the city's minimum wage and receive continued support services for up to six months after completing the program.

Qualifications:

To be eligible to participate in this program, applicants must meet all the following criteria:

  • Must be a resident of Winston-Salem
  • Must be between 16-24 years of age
  • 16 or 17-year-old high school dropout (minimum of 6 months since the last day of high school attendance).
  • Must pass a city background & drug screening
  • Must register for selective services (required for males only)
  • Must be able to work 20 hours a week (Monday – Thursday)

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • A current or former foster youth
  • A youth or adult offender
  • A child of an incarcerated parent
  • A low-income youth
