Assistant Chief Rick Newnum

Assistant Chief Rick Newnum is a 27 year veteran with the Winston-Salem Police Department, starting his career with the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) in 1995. Assistant Chief Newnum is a Veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a shipboard navigator on the Guided Missile Frigate U.S.S. Clifton Sprague FFG-16. Assistant Chief Newnum has lived throughout the western United States but has called Winston-Salem home upon his arrival in 1995.

Professional Career

The past 4 years he has been a District 1 Commander (northwest part of town to include Downtown Winston-Salem) in the Field Services Bureau and recently as the Support Services Division Captain working with Communications, Records, and I.T.  His past assignments have included being a tenured member of the WSPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.  While working in the Office of the Chief of Police, he was an investigator in the departments Professional Standards Division and served as the Departments Off-Duty Coordinator. He spent many years as a member of the WSPD 100 Sector and 200 Sector Foot Patrols as a Corporal and then as a Sergeant.

Assistant Chief Newnum currently leads the Support Services Bureau which houses Communications (911 center), Police Records, Information Technology, Recruiting, Training, Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET), and Evidence Management.

In 2000, Assistant Chief Newnum was awarded the Medal of Merit and was that years WSPD Officer of the Year.  He has been awarded the Above and Beyond Award multiple times.

Education

Assistant Chief Newnum is a graduate of the North Carolina State University Administrative Officers Management Program.   He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.  Assistant Chief Newnum is a Commercially rated Instrument pilot in both single and multi-engine airplanes. He has earned the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.

 Personal

Assistant Chief Newnum and his family volunteer at the Rescue Mission in downtown Winston-Salem.  They are involved with the World Relief Organization, which assists in the Syrian refugee crisis. They team with Compassion International sponsoring two families, one in Africa and one in Central America.  His family has been on several Mission Trips, most recently to the countries of Burkina Faso and Nicaragua.  They are members of The Summit Church here in Winston-Salem. Assistant Chief Newnum is married to wife Gina and they have two daughters, Lydia (Appalachian State graduate) and Mercy (student at NC State).
