Industrial Wastewater

Industrial Wastewater Operations

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities is responsible for the City of Winston-Salem's Industrial Pretreatment Program that is federally mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utility Commission has the responsibility to protect, reduce, and eliminate any pollutants that may interfere with the Publicly-Owned Treatment Works (POTW) for the City of Winston-Salem under the administration of the State of North Carolina's Pretreatment Emergency Response and Collections System Unit.

The inhibition or disruption to the POTW may be caused by Commercial and Significant Industrial Users (SIU). This includes all wastewater from any producing, manufacturing, processing, institution, commercial, agriculture, and/or other operations where the wastewater discharge includes wastes of nonhuman origin. The Commercial or Industrial User may be required to obtain a local permit through the local authority for discharge.

The SIU that discharges to the POTW will be required to obtain a permit for discharge. Industries having a permit will be regulated and monitored for discharges. More information can be found in the Sewer Use Resolution for Industrial Users and Significant Industrial Users.
