The Human Relations Department and the New Horizons Fair Housing Committee of the Human Relations Commission are holding a free day-long symposium Wednesday, Nov. 6, on gentrification and the issues it raises for neighborhoods and individuals. The symposium will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Anderson Conference Center, 601 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Winston-Salem.

The seminar will examine the effects of rehabilitation projects on low- to moderate-income neighborhoods and residents and the impact on the day-to-day lives of those affected. Breakout sessions will cover such topics as how innovative planning and zoning can address gentrification, how downtown revitalization affects housing costs, gentrification and public housing, and the impact of opportunity zones on affordable housing.

Nishani Frasier, an associate professor of history at Miami University of Ohio, will give the keynote address. Other speakers will include James Perry, the president and CEO of the Winston-Salem Urban League; Alex Boston, the staff attorney for the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem; and Jesse Day, the planning director for the Piedmont Triad Regional Council.

Partner organizations for the symposium are Forsyth County Housing and Development, Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods, Winston-Salem Regional Association of Realtors, Financial Pathways of the Piedmont, the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem, ESR, and the UNC-G Center for Housing and Community Studies. Sponsors are the Spatial Justice Studio at the Center for Design Innovation and the North Carolina Homeowners Alliance.
