Winston-Salem Recreation App Puts the City’s Parks at User’s Fingertips

The Winston-Salem Recreation app gives users information about the city of Winston-Salem’s over 80 parks and greenways. Citizens can find specific amenities such as dog parks, ball fields and tennis courts. They can reserve shelters, as well as learn about programs and activities and view 360-degree photos.

The app was created by the city’s Recreation and Parks Department, after staff noticed that a park locator map on the city’s website, which allowed people to search for specific amenities and identify parks close to them, was popular with the public, but was difficult to use on mobile devices. The app can be downloaded by searching for “Winston-Salem Recreation” in your favorite app store.

Josh Billings, GIS administrator in recreation and parks, said that the app has been popular with the public since it was rolled out in October.

“Citizens have been able to discover new parks and amenities that were unknown to them before the app was released,” he said. “New residents have downloaded the app to find everything that they need to know about parks in the city. The 360-degree photos have helped citizens become more familiar with a park before visiting or reserving a shelter.”
