The Winston-Salem Local Governance Study Commission is holding three public sessions at the end of January to brief city residents on the various ways the City Council could be restructured, and to collect public opinion on what changes, if any, should be made.

The sessions will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m.:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Carver High School, 3545 Carver School Road, Winston-Salem;
  • Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Easton Elementary School, 734 Clemmonsville Circle, Winston-Salem; and
  • Thursday, Jan. 30, at South Fork Elementary School, 4332 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem.

Each meeting will open with a brief video overview of the various ways the council could be restructured. Following the video, attendees can circulate among stations with more details about the options presented in the video. All attendees will be asked to fill out a short input form before they leave to give the commission members an idea of what changes, if any, city residents might like to see.

The video and input form are posted online at CityofWS.org/LGSC for residents who are unable to attend any of the input sessions. The survey will also be posted online.

The 11-member, non-partisan commission, jointly appointed by Mayor Allen Joines and N.C. Reps. Donny Lambeth and Debra Conrad, is evaluating the city’s election process. If it determines that a change in the process is needed, the commission will recommend a structure that ensures appropriate representation of all segments of the population. Given the time needed for the commission to complete its work, no changes will occur in the 2020 election process for the Winston-Salem mayor and City Council.

The commission meets the first Tuesday of each month. Agendas and minutes of its meetings are posted at CityofWS.org/LGSC.
