Volunteers are needed to help plant a new community garden Saturday at Helen Nichols Park to honor the memory of Earline Parmon. Anyone age 5 and up is welcome to come between 9 a.m. and noon to help plant fruits and vegetables. The park is at 3521 Carver School Road.

Garden tools and plants will be provided. Because space is limited due to social distancing requirements, volunteers should register in advance by sending an email to Tabetha Childress; tabethab@cityofws.org.

Food grown in the garden will be made available to the local community.

Earlier this month the City Council approved naming the garden in honor of the late Earline Parmon, who served the community in elective office for 25 years starting in 1990, initially as a member of the Forsyth County Commissioners, and later in the N.C. House of Representatives and the N.C. Senate. Parmon, who died in 2016, was the first African American woman to represent Forsyth County in the state Senate.
