Wreath-laying ceremonies and posting honor guards on the anniversaries of the deaths of Winston-Salem police officers killed in the line of duty will resume Sunday, Jan. 3, at the Fallen Officer Memorial Wall in front of the Vivian H. Burke Public Safety Center, 725 N. Cherry St.

A wreath will be placed at the memorial at 8 a.m. to commemorate the death of Officer Donald Allred. Allred died after being struck by a vehicle on Jan. 3, 1983. An honor guard will be posted at the memorial from 7:30 a.m. through the conclusion of the wreath-laying ceremony.  All current executive orders pertaining to the coronavirus pandemic will be adhered to.

The Police Department suspended fallen officer commemorations at the memorial in September 2019 due to renovations of the public safety center that hindered access to the memorial. Renovations to the main entrance and lobby have been completed, allowing the ceremonies to resume.

The Police Department began its current practice for commemorating the deaths of fallen officers in 2010. Eighteen Winston-Salem police officers have been killed in the line of duty, counting one officer killed in 1895 before the consolidation of Winston and Salem.
