[ARCHIVED] 15th Annual Fair and Affordable Housing Summit To Be Held April 22

The 15th Annual Fair and Affordable Housing Summit, organized by the city Human Relations Department, will be held virtually from 2 – 4 p.m. Thursday, April 22, and can be viewed live on the city’s YouTube channel. A link to the channel is available on the city website, CityofWS.org, or the channel can be accessed directly by going to YouTube.com and searching for City of Winston-Salem, NC.

Topics at the summit will include housing affordability for first-time home buyers, fair housing through the lens of the pandemic and social justice movement, state and federal moratoriums on evictions and housing accessibility, and housing financial assistance during the pandemic.

Jeanine Worden, the acting assistant secretary for fair housing and equal opportunity at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will be the guest speaker.

Other speakers will include Stephen Sills, the director of the Center for Housing and Community Studies at University of North Carolina at Greensboro; Ed Sharp, a staff attorney for Legal Aid of North Carolina; Sherri Lawson Clark, an assistant professor of cultural anthropology at Wake Forest University; Dan Kornelis, the retired director of the Forsyth County Department of Community and Economic Development; and Bianca Green, a loan officer with the Forsyth County Department of Community and Economic Development. 

During the summit, the New Horizons Fair Housing Committee will give its annual Breaking Barriers Fair Housing Award to Ujima Community Development Corp., a non-profit organization that built Emmanuel Retirement Village on Barbara Jane Avenue.
