Since late 2020, contractors for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities have been installing new “smart” water meters as part of a systemwide infrastructure upgrade. Customers receive a letter in advance of meter box inspection and installation. Within a few years, all 130,000 residential and commercial customers will have a new smart meter. This modernization will significantly impact management of the water distribution system and provide superior water-loss monitoring tools so staff and customers can be smart with every drop. Replacing aging infrastructure fits well with the utility’s commitment to protecting resources and the environment. The communication network securely transmits and receives water distribution data on-demand. By eliminating the need for routine meter reading, the utility can operate more efficiently and respond quickly to data, including malfunction alerts, leak detection alerts and tamper alarms. Customers will benefit from the WaterSavvy program’s convenience, privacy, accuracy and speed.
