Winston-Salem Wins $30 Million Grant to Transform Cleveland Avenue Homes

Winston-Salem has been selected to receive a $30 million federal grant to transform the aging Cleveland Avenue Homes public housing neighborhood and the surrounding area under the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant was co-awarded to the city and the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem. The grant will allow the housing authority to replace the 244 existing apartments in Cleveland Avenue Homes with 406 new units, similar to the transformation of the Happy Hill and Kimberley Park public housing neighborhoods under the HUD’s HOPE VI program that was a predecessor to the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative. Joines Rescinds Stay-at-Home Order to Align Winston-Salem with State Order

On April 29 Mayor Allen Joines rescinded his stay-at-home order and its provisions in order to bring the city under the provisions of the statewide order issued by Gov. Roy Cooper. Cooper’s order is scheduled to expire May 8, a day after Joines’ order was scheduled to expire.  Placing the city under the statewide order does not change which businesses have been deemed essential or non-essential. Forsyth County has also revised its stay-at home provisions to align with the state timetable. READ MORE

Yard-Waste Collections Reinstated

The city will resume yard-waste collections on Monday, May 4. Collections are being made Mondays through Thursdays in keeping with the regular collection schedule, for those households that have yard carts with current collection stickers. The city suspended collections of yard-waste, brush and bulky items in early April as a precautionary measure to ensure sufficient staffing for garbage collections in the event that a significant number of Sanitation Division employees were unable to work due to COVID-19. However, said City Manager Lee Garrity, "We have been fortunate to only experience minimal staffing disruptions and will be able to move the yard waste personnel back to their normal responsibilities."
