Winston-Salem Cancels the Carolina Classic Fair

Due to the rising trend in positive COVID-19 cases in Forsyth County and the on-going restrictions for mass gatherings statewide, the city of Winston-Salem is canceling the Carolina Classic Fair. The ten-day event had been scheduled to take place October 2-11. City management determined that the likelihood of holding the fair is minimal in light of continued community transmission of the COVID-19 virus in North Carolina. The city's top priority is to ensure the public's safety during the pandemic, and with annual attendance close to 300,000, city leaders are concerned there is no way to eliminate the risk of spreading the virus. Fire Department Offering "Virtual" Citizen Fire Academy

Starting Monday, Aug. 10, the Winston-Salem Fire Department will begin a virtual Citizen Fire Academy featuring videos posted online in lieu of its traditional in-class program for city residents. The virtual academy has eight videos that will be rolled out every Monday (except Labor Day) from Aug. 10 through Oct. 5. The videos will be a combination of information about how the Winston-Salem Fire Department operates and fire and life safety tips to keep you safe at home. Residents can go to CityofWSFire.org to view a list of topics and sign up to receive reminder notifications every time a new video for the virtual Citizen Fire Academy is posted.

New Liberty Street Urban Farmers Market Accepting SNAP EBT Cards

A new farmers market operating on Liberty Street will soon begin accepting SNAP EBT cards of payment. The Liberty Street Urban Farmers Market is open from 4 to 6 p.m. every second and fourth Friday. Starting August 14, customers will be able to use their SNAP EBT cards to make purchases. The process will be similar to the SNAP EBT transaction at the Fairgrounds Farmers Market, where customers can have their SNAP EBT card swiped through a reader and receive an equivalent amount in tokens that vendors accept for purchases.

Joines Orders Masks to be Worn in All City Buildings

Mayor Allen Joines has ordered that masks, shields or other face coverings be worn by anyone inside city government buildings, including City Hall, the Stuart Municipal Building, other enclosed city facilities and facilities that the city leases. The order also applies to city-owned parking decks, the Clark Campbell Transportation Center and buses and other vehicles operated by the Winston-Salem Transit Authority.

The mandate does not apply to open-air facilities owned by the city, including basketball and tennis courts, golf courses or picnic shelters. Masks are not required for pools and pool decks, but they are required in pool bathhouses. Joines' order and a complete list of city facilities covered by the order are posted online at CityofWS.org/Covid19.

Collage of various Bulky Items

Bulky Item Collection Canceled for 2020

Bulky item collection, which the city suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will not be reinstated this year. Canceling the bulky item collection year frees up personnel and resources to ensure the city works through the backlog in brush collection before leaf season starts. The city staff will reevaluate progress during leaf season to see if it is feasible to start bulky item collection earlier than usual next year. In the meantime, city homeowners can apply for a free landfill permit to take bulky items to the Hanes Mill Road Landfill at no charge.

Memory Wall of Peace and Love

Bids Sought to Restore "Memory Wall of Peace and Love"

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Art Commission is seeking an artist or team of artists to repair and restore the "Memory Wall of Peace and Love" on Trade Street behind the Clark Campbell Transportation Center. The wall, completed in 1999, is embedded with hundreds of objects, keepsakes, and artifacts donated by local citizens. Since it was created more than 20 years ago, the wall has deteriorated and been vandalized. Some sculptural elements have crumbled or been removed. Bids are due no later than Sept. 25. Complete information about the wall, including photographs, the scope of work, bid requirements and submission guidelines, is posted at CityofWS.org/PublicArt.
