Where does grease come from?

Grease is used in cooking and it occurs naturally in many foods. It can be found in such items as:

  • Baking goods
  • Butter
  • Cooking oil or shortening
  • Food scraps
  • Lard
  • Margarine
  • Meat fats
  • Salad dressing
  • Sauces

Hot water does not dissolve grease. If you pour grease down the drain with hot water, it will harden in the pipes as soon as the water cools off.

See our Can the Grease - La Grasa al Bote flyer (PDF) for more information. Print 2-sided & cut in half.

If you have a sewer backup, see our Good Neighbor Policy (PDF) or Politica del Buen Vecino (PDF). You may also visit cityofws.org/gnp for more information on plumber and property owner responsibilities.
